Dr. Berger’s “12 Smart Things That Strengthen Recovery” is laid out for any reader at any level of recovery to understand and grasp. What touched my heart and pulled me in was that it was clear from the beginning that this wasn’t written by just anyone with the letters Ph.D. after his name. What qualified him to write a book on changing ones life is the fact that here we have an academician who has clearly done his own work. With over 39 years of recovery himself, these guidelines have been borne from his own personal experiences in recovery. You feel as though his heart is speaking to yours. He is one of us who has found the grace to be on the path of the 12 Steps. I recommend this book of guidelines to anyone in any of the Twelve Step Programs.

12 Smart Things is an aptly given title for this collection of creative, but down-to-earth counsel on how to tackle the daunting task of taking recovery to the next level and maturing as a complete person in long-term sobriety.  Dr. Berger has managed to fit much insight  into a little book that reads like an afternoon over coffee with a wise and experienced friend who cares enough to share what works, what doesn't, and how to spot the difference

Finally, a book that is thoughtfully written about emotional sobriety in a practical and enlightening way.  Dr. Berger unleashes the notion that the peace and security we seek outside ourselves has always lived within us ready to be accessed when we are finally ready to walk thru the pains and gains of simply growing up.
